Top-down implementation of a system of protected sites and species has not halted biodiversity loss &#8211; as is recognised in, for instance, the European Union\u2019s Biodiversity 2020 and Green Infrastructure strategies, and in the CBD\u2019s Aichi targets.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The necessity to continue investing in the systems for <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>species and habitats<\/strong><\/span> protection is clear, and finishing the <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>Natura 2000<\/strong><\/span> system is for instance still the first target of the European Commission\u2019s <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>Biodiversity Strategy 2020<\/strong><\/span>. But especially in its other targets the strategy now changes focus to a much more integrated approach to conservation, which also targets the biodiversity outside protected areas and seeks to \u2018mainstream\u2019 biodiversity concerns across all policy areas, including agriculture, forestry and urban planning.The <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>Green Infrastructure (GI) Strategy<\/strong><\/span> is one of the main instruments for this integrated approach.<\/p>\n<p>The new focus is mainly based on awareness of the <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>services <span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips14' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>ecosystems<\/span> provide<\/strong><\/span>, the <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>dependency of those\u00a0services on biodiversity<\/strong><\/span>, and the importance of biodiversity conservation for their\u00a0restoration and protection of their sustainable use.<\/p>\n<p>Our findings show that the success of this approach largely depends on convincing actors at all levels of the necessity and <span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips23' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>benefits<\/span> of protecting and investing in biodiversity, and of the active role they themselves need to play in this process.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> toolTips('.classtoolTips27','The variety of living organisms and the ecological complexes of which they are part.
