The concept \u201cecosystem goods and services\u201d is synonymous with ecosystem services (ES).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2074 size-full alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/tool-besafe.pensoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MEA-classification4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/besafetool.euprojects.awt-2.arphahub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MEA-classification4.png 402w, https:\/\/besafetool.euprojects.awt-2.arphahub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MEA-classification4-235x300.png 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The MEA distinguished four categories (figure 1):\u00a0provisioning services such as food and water; regulating services such as flood and disease control; cultural services such as spiritual, recreational, and cultural benefits; and supporting services such as nutrient cycling that maintain the conditions for life on Earth.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #286239;\"><strong>The Economics of Ecosystems and <span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips27' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>Biodiversity<\/span><\/strong><\/span> (TEEB),\u00a0a global initiative focused on \u201cmaking nature\u2019s values visible\u201d, with the objective to mainstream the values of biodiversity and ecosystem services into decision-making at all levels, used a similar ES classification.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission Working Group on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) is developing the detailed <span style=\"color: #286239;\"><strong>Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES)<\/strong><\/span>  classification system for mapping purposes in which the supporting and regulating services are combined in one regulating and maintenance class.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> toolTips('.classtoolTips27','The variety of living organisms and the ecological complexes of which they are part.
